From cleaning your mechanical ventilation...to replacing the mechanical ventilation.

Your mechanical ventilation does not require much maintenance. But cleaning the mechanical ventilation is part of it. Yes, if you want to keep it healthy indoors. Then you need fresh, clean air.

To live healthily you need fresh, clean indoor air. Cleaning the mechanical ventilation (or having it cleaned) is therefore important to maintain good indoor air quality. The mechanical ventilation box ensures clean air in the home by removing polluted and/or moist air.

Mechanical ventilation maintenance

Do you want to know what mechanical ventilation maintenance entails? Or are you curious when mechanical ventilation needs to be replaced? We list some tips and frequently asked questions for you below.

Do you need to clean mechanical ventilation?

For clean air in your home, you need to clean your mechanical ventilation every now and then. Or have it cleaned. You can easily clean your mechanical ventilation yourself on a number of points. This means you are already taking the first step towards keeping the air in your home clean. In addition, it is important to have mechanical ventilation maintenance carried out by an installer. To each his own, right?

Checking and cleaning the valves is also part of this. In other words: the extraction points in the ceiling or wall. These extract dirty air, for example from your kitchen, bathroom and toilet. So a lot of dirt comes along there. Cleaning these is also part of ventilation maintenance.

Cleaning the mechanical ventilation: this is what you can do yourself

First of all... what can you easily do about your mechanical ventilation? Cleaning the window grilles! By this we mean the grilles in doors, windows or sliding doors. Through these window grilles, fresh air from outside is sucked into the home through your mechanical ventilation. All kinds of dirt, such as dust, accumulate in these window grilles. Sometimes the dirt makes it more difficult to open and close the grille. This of course also hinders fresh air from entering your home. And if it does come in, the fresh air is already dirty before it even enters your house. That is precisely why it is important for the operation of your mechanical ventilation: cleaning grilles is important. Preferably on the inside and outside of your home.

This is what you ask a professional for the maintenance of mechanical ventilation

To extend the lifespan of your mechanical ventilation system, ask an installer to carry out thorough maintenance. You will therefore have to call in a specialist company to clean the ventilation ducts and the ventilation box. But the good news is: you will find that thoroughly cleaning the mechanical ventilation will ensure that your system works much better!

How often do you have your mechanical ventilation cleaned?

That depends on several factors. The location of your home, for example, and therefore the quality of the outside air. A lot of dirt in the outside air? You will then see this on window grilles, valves, ventilation ducts and the ventilation box of your mechanical ventilation. Cleaning is then necessary more often. Lifestyle also plays a role in how often mechanical ventilation is required to be cleaned.

Maintenance by the installer of the ventilation box once every two years is often sufficient. The installer will clean and check the ventilation box. It is best to have the ventilation ducts, or the ducts through which the air is removed, cleaned once every eight years. A professional does this with a powder or brushes.

Do you know

Fortunately, replacing your mechanical ventilation is not necessary. A mechanical ventilation system lasts a very long time. The lifespan is often about fifteen years.

Replace mechanical ventilation

Of course, despite your good care, it may still be necessary to replace the mechanical ventilation. Replacing mechanical ventilation is necessary when it no longer works (properly) or no longer meets your needs.

A common reason why people replace their old mechanical ventilation is noise. Developments surrounding (mechanical) ventilation in combination with living comfort are moving rapidly. As a result, new mechanical ventilation systems are often barely audible. The Zehnder ComfoFan Silent, for example.

Replacing mechanical ventilation is also done for sustainability reasons. For example, replacing the old mechanical ventilation with a newer variant or switching to a heat recovery unit can be very attractive to save on energy costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

About cleaning, cleaning and replacing the mechanical ventilation system

Grease and dust collect on the ventilation valves in the home. You can easily clean these valves with soapy water and dishwashing liquid. You can carefully remove them from the wall or ceiling. Make sure that you put the valves back in the right place. The valves are set differently in height. As a result, the mechanical ventilation box extracts exactly the required amount of air for the room in question. The installer can mark the valves for you when adjusting your ventilation system.

Do you have designer air valves such as the Luna ComfoValve? Then don't worry. The lock prevents you from accidentally setting the valve to a different position during cleaning.

As we wrote earlier, the grilles in windows, doors and sliding doors are crucial for the operation of the mechanical ventilation system. This is where the fresh outside air is sucked into the home.

It is best to clean the window grilles in a mechanical ventilation system with, for example, a vacuum cleaner and/or a brush. Because you clean the grill dry, no extra dirt will stick. If you can remove the cover from the window grille, you can clean it with soapy water and then dry it. Clean the grilles both on the inside and outside.

A mechanical ventilation system has a long lifespan. At least 15 years, but usually much longer. The ventilation box must be replaced when it no longer works (properly) or when it no longer meets your needs. New ventilation boxes are quieter and more energy efficient.

You can have the mechanical ventilation system replaced by an installer who specializes in ventilation.
